Introduction to the Concept of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and the Role of Risk Communication

On Monday, March 9, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Research, Innovation and Partnerships Office (RIPO) hosted an Invited Talk titled “Introduction to the Concept of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and the Role of Risk Communication” at Room UX 702, 7th Floor, Utility Exchange Building (N12), with over 40 participants in attendance. The session officially commenced with opening remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bundit Fungtammasan, Advisor to the President for Research and Innovation. The event was also graced by the presence of university executives, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supapon Cheevadhanarak, Advisor to the President for Research Integrity and Ethics; Dr. Warinthorn Songkasiri, Vice President for Research Strategy; and Dr. Papapit Hirunsirisawat, Director of Research, Innovation and Partnerships Office.   The main lecture by Professor Lynn Frewer from Newcastle University, UK, highlighted the crucial connection between “Responsible Research and Innovation” (RRI) and effective risk communication. She explained that applying RRI, which involves comprehensively assessing societal and environmental impacts through stakeholder co-design, helps innovations gain public acceptance and successfully cross the commercial “valley of death.” Drawing on diverse case studies, from public resistance to GM crops and the BSE crisis to the EU AI Act and “Living Labs,” Professor Frewer presented the significant gap between experts relying on technical data and a general public often guided by emotion. She emphasized that scientific facts alone cannot generate public acceptance without trust, making transparent and open listening spaces essential. Ultimately, navigating crises and emerging challenges like climate change requires risk communication that is rapid, transparent, directly addresses societal concerns, and appropriately leverages digital technologies.
