King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) showcased its design project, “Augmented Craft Pavilion,” a pioneering steam-bent rattan structure at Bangkok Design Week 2026. Organized by the Creative Economy Agency (CEA), the event was held from January 28 to February 8, 2026, in front of the Grand Postal Building in Bang Rak, Bangkok. The project is a multidisciplinary collaboration between the Faculty of Architecture and Design, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Institute of Field Robotics (FIBO). It marks a significant achievement in integrating Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies into the design and construction of structures made from local natural materials. By leveraging these technologies, the team successfully broke the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship, elevating rattan—a common material typically limited to basketry or small furniture—into a high-potential medium for large-scale architectural design.

On February 5, 2026, the project “Augmented Craft” was honored with “The Best of Bangkok Design Week 2026,” a prestigious award recognizing the most creative and outstanding design showcased at the festival. The award was presented by the European Product Design Award (EPDA), a globally recognized institution in product design. Asst. Prof. Waraluk Pansuwan, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design, a Project Leader, alongside designer Igor Pantic and the project team, formally accepted the award. This achievement highlights the exceptional caliber of the faculty and staff, earning esteemed recognition from a leading international organization in Europe.”

The European Product Design Award (EPDA) was established in 2016 by the Farmani Group in cooperation with the European Parliament. As a strategic partner of Bangkok Design Week, in collaboration with the Creative Economy Agency (CEA), EPDA presents “The Best of Bangkok Design Week” award to organizations that demonstrate international design excellence. The award aims to celebrate the inherent value of Thai design while promoting visionary works that generate a significant positive impact on society, the environment, and the economy.
