KMUTT Collaborates with Partners to Host Focus Group on Scenario Setting for Thailand’s Long-term Energy Planning for Carbon Neutrality
Date: October 10, 2024
Venue: 12th Floor, Ratchadamri Room, Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn, Bangkok

On October 10, 2024, at Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn, the partners under the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility, and Climate (TGC EMC) organized a sub-group of experts to set a scenario setting for Thailand’s Long-term Energy Planning for Carbon Neutrality. The meeting was led by researchers from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), who are responsible for the Integrated Energy System Modeling and Analysis under this project. The participants included experts from key stakeholder groups, such as policymakers, planners, analysts, technical experts, and consultants from various ministries and related organizations. They brainstormed to identify scenarios and narratives for each scenario, as well as appropriate technology options for the energy system transition to carbon neutrality in the Thai context. The KMUTT researchers involved conducted a preliminary study. The results were then presented to the meeting for constructive comments and criticism, with the aim of obtaining a reasonable scenario and technology alternatives from the perspective of the expert panel, which will serve as a starting point for creating pathways for energy system transformation that will support the activities of the Energy Policy and Planning Office, Ministry of Energy, in setting a long-term integrated energy plan that is consistent with the carbon neutrality target. This meeting was attended by over 40 participants.
The Thai-German TGC EMC project aims to support key agencies to enhance their capacity to drive Thailand’s greenhouse gas reduction targets and sustainable energy transition, as well as create economic growth in line with climate commitments. The project consists of 5 groups: 1) Renewable Energy Group, 2) Transportation Group, 3) Industrial Carbon Dioxide Reduction Group, 4) Biomass Energy Group, and 5) Thai Climate Initiative (ThaiCI) Fund Group.
