Professor Emeritus Dr. Yongyuth Yuthavong, Chairman of the KMUTT University Council, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Sciences in recognition of his lifelong dedication to advancing science for societal benefit, as well as his deep and enduring connection to Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The ceremony was attended by Professor Colin Bailey CBE, FREng, President and Principal; Professor Wen Wang FREng, Vice Principal for Science and Engineering; and senior executives from the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) at Queen Mary University of London.
Professor Emeritus Dr. Yongyuth Yuthavong is a distinguished Thai scientist whose career spans groundbreaking scientific discovery, national policy leadership, and significant international impact. A chemistry alumnus of Queen Mary College—one of Queen Mary’s founding institutions—Professor Yongyuth subsequently pursued further studies at the University of Oxford. He later established a prolific research career at Mahidol University, where he served as a Professor of Biochemistry.
His leadership in Thailand’s scientific landscape includes serving as the Director of the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (1985–1989), the First President of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) (1991–1998), the Minister of Science and Technology (2006–2008), and the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand (2014–2015).
Professor Yongyuth’s numerous honors include the Outstanding Scientist of Thailand Award, the Nikkei Asia Prize for Science, Technology and Innovation, and the Dushdi Mala Medal (Pin of Arts and Science). During this visit to the United Kingdom, he also led a senior delegation from King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi to develop new strategic partnerships. These initiatives aim to launch joint engineering programs in AI, electronics, and robotics, while expanding research collaboration between the two institutions.
