Food Engineering Practice School
Thailand?s
industrial development is still severely hampered by a shortage of food engineers.
Introduction of more advanced and complex technologies has generated a need
for more elite engineers and leaders to steer the food industries.
The Food Engineering
Practice School (FEPS) program at King Mongkut?s Institute of Technology Thonburi
(KMUTT) is the forerunner of the growing trend of the private sector utilizing
research and development potential of universities. KMUTT is joining forces
with several Thai food industry leaders.
The FEPS program
has been established to meet the large demand for qualified food engineers
in the fast-growing food and agro-processing industries of the country. The
Program offers a Master?s degree to graduates with either food engineering
or food science and technology backgrounds.
Intensive Curriculum
FEPS is
a two-year International Program, conducted in English, leading to a Master?s
Degree in Food Engineering Practice. The FEPS curriculum consists of spending
one academic year and two summers on graduate courses including problem-based
studies on campus. This is followed by one semester working as part of a team
at an industrial practice school site on technical projects. The final semester
will be spent conducting individual research at KMUTT. The intensive course
and practical work will give students deeper understanding of food systems
as well as valuable work experience for their career development. Graduates
will become an important human resource for the future development of the
Thai food industry.
Knowledge through Experience
Strong
emphasis is placed on practical experience at industrial sites to give students
valuable work experience. The practice school is like a consulting company
to attain a great deal of the clients? requirements in a relatively short
time. The practice site school fosters: organization, planning, leadership,
teamwork, engineering judgement, communication and engineering management.
During
the first year at KMUTT, FEPS students have the opportunity to receive additional
training in food engineering fundamentals as well as specialized intensive courses.
Students will be introduced to design problems during the initial year. These
case studies are designed to enhance the students? problem-solving skills and
to prepare them for the real industrial situation they will face in the second
year. To provide students with vision and insight into the food industry, plant
trips and regular seminars will be given by speakers from academic institutions
and industrial sectors. Students will enjoy the opportunity to learn and update
their knowledge of food and technology as well as improving their
English
communication skills.

FEPS has well-equipped
classrooms and laboratories to accommodate the practical and theoretical training
demanded from the program. Demonstrations of food plant and industrial equipment
are provided in the Food Engineering Workshop and students will also have
access to the facilities and expertise of the Pilot Plant Development and
Training Institute (PDTI) located at KMUTT.
Enrollment
For each new academic
year, FEPS staff will be visiting universities throughout Thailand to recruit
potential students for enrollment. Prospective applicants should have an accredited
Bachelor Degree in Food Engineering or Food Science and Technology. Scholarships
are available to qualified candidates
