Introduction
GMSTEC 2010:
International Conference for a Sustainable Greater Mekong Subregion
26 - 27 August 2010, Bangkok, Thailand
Covering over 2.3 million square kilometers and approximately 240 million people live within, the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) is a vast area of enormous wealth and variety of natural resources. The lands of the GMS combined comprise a well balance of rich agricultural bases from timber to fisheries, as well as growing new economy and industrialization expanding from Cambodia to Yunnan Province in the People’s Republic of China. With the abundance in human and natural resources, the Mekong region creates itself a new frontier and great potential for Asian economic growth.
In celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2010, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi will join force with other GMS members to invite you to GMSTEC 2010: International Conference for a Sustainable Greater Mekong Sub-region. This auspicious event will be held in Bangkok, Thailand during 26th – 27th August 2010. The conference puts great emphasis on addressing the critical shifting of the region from subsistence farming and agriculture to more diversified economics, and more open, market-based systems. On a sub-regional basis, the current industrial development has rapidly depleted our valuable natural resources. In some areas, the regional progress is fast-forwarded by the rapid economic growth while little concern is placed on the negative impacts to its nature and people.
The three research themes of the conference – Environment and Natural Resources, Energy and Materials, Policy and Human Development – accommodate sharing space for scientists and technologists alike in shaping solutions to improve a better standard of living for people in the region. The conference will help streamline the future developments gearing toward the sustainability of our environment, culture, economy and society while encouraging modernization and industrialization of this prosperous region.
