Visit Doi Tung "Switzerland in Thailand". This description seems apt when viewing the crisp line of mountains of Chiang Rai in the cool winter season, or when the mist and clouds of the rainy season roll in above the verdant forest against a background of an ever-changing sky. This natural beauty has been enhanced through the effort and perseverance of the people of Doi Tung in reviving their once deteriorated forests. The now lush forests are their legacy to pass on to their descendants. It is through their work that they accomplished the gracious commands in the memory of Her Royal Highness, the Princess Mother, through the Doi Tung Development Project under Royal Initiative, that has returned the mountains to their natural environment. The Princess Mother has passed away, but her inspiration has lived on through the dedication of the loyal staff of the Doi Tung Development Project. Visitors to Doi Tung can experience for themselves the natural beauty of the hills, and appreciate the efforts of the people of Doi Tung. They can see how people and forests can live together, while the people preserve the forests, the forests support the livelihood of the people.

Visit Mae Sai is a typical small Thai town and would normally be completely unremarkable. Nevertheless, it is one of the most exciting places in the kingdom, and that is because it is the most northern spot of the country and across a small river lies the Burmese town Tachilek. Every day, a steady stream of commuters crosses the bridge that marks the borders and Thai consumer goods into Northern Burma (and also carries back Burmese specialties like heroin, smuggled rubies, and so on, but that is a different story). Day visa for Tachilek can (at the moment at least) easily be obtained if you have brought your passport; the cost is 250 Baht. Get the visa at the border checkpoint walk across the bridge and you are in Burma.

Lunch at the local restaurant

Chiang Khong and Mae Sai are gateways to Myanmar and Laos. One of the best known tourist attraction in the world, the Golden Triangle, is in Chiang Saen where the Mekong River enters Thailand, The Golden Triangle Apex (Sop Ruak). This is the cross-roads of the three-land borders. The Ruak River bordering Thailand and Myanmar runs into the Mekong River from Laos creating the well known Golden triangle. In the old days drug traffickers secretly met to barter off opium with gold nuggets. Today it is a bustling tourist destination where visitors come to enjoy the rising sun emerging from the misty seas of fog. There are several piers to board a river cruise. A six -passenger trip can cost about 300-400 baht. A long-distance cruise, which certainly costs more, can take you as far as Chiang Khong, Chiang Saen , Luang Prabang, Dip Dong Pan Ma, and even to Khunming in the south of china. Then, visit The Opium Museum - at a small town called Sop Ruak was recently opened a museum called the House of Opium, displaying artefacts relating to opium production and the ill effects of using the finished product. The notorious “Opium War”, a battle which took place in 1967 between the KMT army and the now-deposed opium lord, Khun Sa, was over control of the opium trade.
The area's main attraction however, remains the Mekong. Visitors are encouraged to take a boat trip down the river in order to fully appreciate the superb landscapes offered by Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.
